Sharjah launches a project to develop and establish new traffic hubs to enhance connectivity with Dubai

Sharjah, June 17 / WAM / The Emirate of Sharjah launched a strategic project to develop and establish new traffic hubs aimed at enhancing connectivity with the Emirate of Dubai and raising the efficiency of the road network, in implementation of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, aimed at developing infrastructure and supporting urban and population growth in the emirate.

The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority is implementing the project in coordination with a number of relevant government and service agencies, including the Department of Planning and Survey, the Sharjah Police General Headquarters, the Sharjah City Municipality, the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority, the “E&” Group, and the Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company “du”.

The project includes developing the Al Taawun Square axis up to Al Nahda Bridge and from there to the Emirate of Dubai, in addition to developing the Al Khan Street axis extending to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, in a way that enhances connectivity between vital areas in the emirate and raises the efficiency of traffic movement between Sharjah and Dubai.

The project aims to connect the traditional center of Sharjah, represented by the Lakes, Al Taawun, and Al Khan areas, with the modern urban areas extending along Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, as well as enhancing the efficiency of the axes leading to the Emirate of Dubai.

The project consists of five main parts that are being implemented simultaneously, including developing the Al Taawun Square Tunnel, developing the Al Khulafa Al Rashidun Interchange, developing the intersections at the First and Second Industrial Streets, developing the intersection at the Third Industrial Street, in addition to raising the efficiency of the intersection with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, with the first phase being opened during November 2026.

The project is expected to contribute to creating a qualitative shift in the emirate’s road network by providing a direct link between the Al Taawun, Al Khan and Lakes areas and the local and federal highways, thus reducing pressure on Al Ittihad Road and shortening travel times between Sharjah and Dubai.

The project provides easier access to a number of vital destinations, including the Sharjah Expo Centre, the Sharjah International Book Fair, and the late Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan Al Qasimi Mosque in the Al Mamzar area, in addition to serving high-density residential areas such as Al Majaz and Al Nahda.

The first part of the project includes the construction of a new tunnel in Al Taawun Square, with a length of 500 meters, extending along Al Taawun Street towards Al Nahda Bridge and the Emirate of Dubai. It consists of three lanes in each direction, in addition to the construction of a new traffic intersection with traffic lights according to advanced engineering standards, while the tunnel is designed to accommodate about 4,200 vehicles in each direction during peak hours.

The second part includes developing the Al-Khulafa Al-Rashidun Interchange by adding box ferries under the bridge, expanding the lanes, and constructing a 315-meter-long subsidiary bridge that provides direct access to Gamal Abdel Nasser Street, in addition to creating a free entrance from Al-Ittihad Street to Al-Khan Street, which contributes to increasing the intersection’s capacity by about 2,600 vehicles per hour in both directions.

The third part includes developing the intersections of the First and Second Industrial Streets by constructing two new bridges with two lanes in each direction, and providing free turns for those coming from Dubai towards Maliha Street, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Street, and Wasit Street, with a capacity of up to 2,800 vehicles in each direction per hour during peak times.

The fourth part includes developing the intersection at the Third Industrial Street by constructing new bridges and paths linking the industrial areas with the Ring Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Al Khan Street, and Al Ittihad Street, in addition to implementing works with a total length of approximately 2.7 kilometers, providing an additional capacity estimated at about 5,200 vehicles per hour in both directions.

The authorities supervising the project confirmed that the works will be carried out according to an intensive schedule using modern construction techniques, including precast concrete, with the aim of accelerating the pace of completion and ensuring the opening of the project on time.

It is expected that the project, upon completion, will contribute to raising the efficiency of the road network and increasing its capacity, enhancing connectivity between the main hubs in the emirate, and supporting the growing movement of residents and visitors, in line with the comprehensive development plans witnessed by the Emirate of Sharjah.
