Argentina, the World Cup holder, qualified for the round of 16 of the World Cup with great difficulty, after defeating Cape Verde 3-2 in the round of 32 match that extended overtime.
Argentina’s captain, Lionel Messi, excelled, scoring one goal and making two assists, as Argentina took the lead in the 29th minute, and Deroy Duarte equalized for Cape Verde in the 59th minute.
In extra time, Lisandro Martinez took the lead again for Argentina in the 93rd minute, and Sidney Cabral tied again for Cape Verde in the 103rd minute, before Cape Verde defender Denny Edilson accidentally scored the decisive goal for the Argentine team in the 111th minute.
The Argentine national team will meet in the round of 16 on July 7, with the Egyptian national team, which had defeated Australia earlier on Friday on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw.
