Abu Dhabi, July 4, 2020 – The UAE Professional League announced the development of the Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank Football Cup for the 2026-2027 sports season, increasing the number of matches to 49, instead of 25, in 4 rounds starting from the preliminary, quarter and semi-finals, all the way to the final round.
The association confirmed that the aim of increasing the number of matches is to increase the competitive value and enable the participating teams to play the largest number of matches in the competition starting from the preliminary round.
Each team plays 6 matches, shared equally inside and outside its home stadium, and then the top 8 teams qualify for the quarter-finals, which is held in a knockout system.
Khaled Al Kaabi, manager of the Shabab Al Ahli team, said that the UAE Professional League is undertaking great development efforts that will raise the level of the tournaments it organizes. He described the increase in the number of matches in the Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank Cup as giving the participating teams a great opportunity to play more matches with competitive opportunities to skip the preliminary round.
Mansour Ali, manager of the Baniyas team, stressed that developing the Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank Cup, by increasing the number of matches in the new season, contributes to improving the competition and leads to a better reality for the participating teams, with the aim of achieving positive results and reaching the advanced stages. At the same time, he expressed the aspirations of the Baniyas team to present a distinguished season, thanks to the great efforts of the club’s management in strengthening its ranks with good elements.
In turn, Muhammad Qasim, manager of the newly promoted United team to the professional stage, expressed his appreciation for the association’s efforts and its keenness to develop competitions and achieve positive outcomes, explaining that the United team is looking forward to showing good levels in the challenge that awaits it in the first season with the professionals.
