A complete power outage. Cuba is plunged into darkness again

Power outage in Cuba
This outage comes in light of a worsening energy crisis that Cuba is suffering from, as a result of the dilapidation of infrastructure and the lack of fuel necessary to operate power plants. It is the eighth widespread outage that the country has witnessed since late 2024.
The Cuban authorities are implementing a system of rationing electricity, which lasts for a period of time in some areas of the capital. Havana extended to more than 24 hours, while outage periods exceeded 70 hours in some rural areas, in an attempt to rationalize fuel consumption.
The electricity crisis has worsened since the United States tightened restrictions on the supply of petroleum derivatives to the island last January, which led to the depletion of the limited fuel stock necessary to operate the generating stations.
Food shortages
Cuba also suffers from a shortage of food, drinking water and medicines, amid UN warnings. From the deterioration of humanitarian conditions.
In an attempt to alleviate the crisis, the government intensified its investments in solar energy projects, which currently represent about 10% of the country’s total energy sources.
