Spain controls a forest fire that killed 12 people… and hundreds returned to their homes
Officials announced Sunday control of Forest fire killed at least 12 people in Southern Spain, allowing hundreds of evacuated residents to return to their homes, while firefighters continue their efforts to completely extinguish it.
Andalusia Regional President Juan Manuel Moreno wrote on Sunday in a post on the X platform "good news. After very difficult days, the Firefighting The Los Gayardos fire has become stable"
The regional official in the rescue services, Antonio Sanz, said that the authorities allowed about 600 people out of the 1,500 people who were evacuated from the fire area in the province of Almeria to return to their homes.
The weather conditions improved
Sanz added in a statement to the Andalusian regional government that "The fire-fighting operations carried out today, along with the stabilization of the situation in most of its surroundings, allowed these measures to be taken and to continue moving towards returning to normal life, while exercising the utmost caution."
These optimistic forecasts came after the improvement of weather conditions with a decrease in wind speed and an increase in humidity, which allowed fire brigades to intensify fire-fighting operations.
Controlling the fire
Justice Minister Felix Bolaños said on Saturday that the fire brigades benefited from the improvement in wind and humidity conditions, which allowed them to get closer to controlling the fire.
The area affected by the fire stabilized at about 6,600 hectares. (16,300 acres), after the spread of the fire stopped on Saturday, according to the minister, and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is scheduled to visit the affected area on Monday.
