Dubai Roads develops lighting for 30 pedestrian bridges with smart technologies

The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai has begun implementing a project to develop lighting systems for 30 pedestrian bridges across the emirate as part of the “People Happiness” initiative, in a step aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety, raising the level of comfort and improving the transportation experience in a way that supports the quality of life and consolidates Dubai’s position as a smart and sustainable city that adopts the latest innovative solutions in developing its infrastructure.

The project relies on providing the bridges with modern energy-saving LED lighting systems that use motion-sensing technologies, which automatically light up when the bridge is used by pedestrians, which contributes to raising the efficiency of energy consumption and reducing operational costs while maintaining the highest levels of safety and security during the evening periods.
The Authority confirmed that the project falls within its efforts to support the green economy and sustainable development through the optimal use of its assets and extending their operational life, in addition to providing a safer and more comfortable transportation environment for all users of road facilities.

The Authority conducted comprehensive field studies and surveys of the targeted bridges, using specialized devices to measure lighting intensity and assess the technical needs of each site to ensure the provision of lighting levels that comply with the approved specifications and enhance the efficiency of the infrastructure.

The first phase includes implementing lighting works on 21 pedestrian bridges, with the project being fully completed during the fourth quarter of 2026, while the Authority continues to develop road and facility lighting systems by employing the latest technologies appropriate to environmental conditions in a way that supports sustainability goals and raises the level of services provided to Dubai’s residents and visitors.
