Asian gold for the UAE via Hussein Shawqi in the age group swimming championship in Thailand
Bangkok, July 21, WAM / Hussein Shawqi, the UAE national team swimmer, won the gold medal in the 50-meter freestyle, in the 12th Asian Swimming Championships for age groups, held in the Thai capital, Bangkok, adding a new continental achievement to the UAE swimming record.
The coronation came two days after Shawqi won the silver medal in the 50-meter butterfly, which represented the first medal for the UAE in the championship. He concluded his participation by winning gold, confirming his distinguished presence among the continent’s elite swimmers.
The achievement is an extension of the series of successes achieved by Shawqi at the Asian level, and also reflects the development witnessed by Emirati swimming in age group competitions, in light of the national team preparation programmes.
Abdullah Al Wahaibi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Water Sports Federation and head of the delegation, confirmed that the achievement represents the result of continuous work in preparing the national teams, and reflects the joint efforts between the player and the technical and administrative staff.
He said: We congratulate our wise leadership and Emirati sports on this new continental achievement, and we congratulate champion Hussein Shawqi on the distinguished performance that won the gold medal after strong competitions with the elite of Asian swimmers. This achievement confirms that the national team preparation programs are moving in the right direction. We also appreciate the efforts of all members of the team delegation who presented an honorable image of Emirati sports, and we look forward to continuing to achieve more achievements in the upcoming competitions.
The UAE national team participated in the tournament with 7 swimmers: Hussein Shawqi, Hamad Al Shehhi, Abdullah Al Ameri, Saif Juman, Mohammed Al Yamahi, Saif Al Yamahi, and Yara Al Muhairi. The delegation was headed by Abdullah Al-Wahaibi, while the technical staff included Marwan Al-Hattawi, technical director, Talal Al-Ali, coach of the national team, along with Naomi Bernadette, manager of the women’s national team.
