Sharjah, July 27 / WAM / Sharjah Public Libraries will launch during the period from 3 to 6 August next year its summer camp for this year under the slogan “Beyond the Book”. It includes library branches in Sharjah, Al Dhaid, Kalba, Khor Fakkan, Wadi Al Hilo and Dibba Al Hisn. It includes events and activities that combine reading, writing, drawing, design, and oral and visual expression, targeting children and adolescents from 6 to 18 years old.
The camp takes participants on a cognitive and creative experience that monitors the path an idea takes before it becomes a book. Starting from observation, imagination, and oral stories, through to the first symbols and drawings that humans used to express their thoughts, all the way to building the story, designing the cover, and understanding the stages of printing and publishing.
The program aims to develop imagination, narrative and expression skills, introduce participants to the stages of book making, enhance creative thinking and innovation, and encourage them to transform their ideas into mini-story projects that can be presented and shared.
Iman Bushalibi, Director of the Sharjah Public Libraries Department, said that the summer camp is an extension of the role of Sharjah Public Libraries in building a close relationship between emerging generations and knowledge. School vacation during the summer provides sufficient time for self-development and enhancing skills and talents. We work through the summer camp to invest this time in opening a safe space that provides children and adolescents with an opportunity to explore, learn and work together. Through this experience, we confirm the role of the library as a knowledge and creative center that contributes to building future generations.
Children at the Sharjah Public Library go through an experience that begins with the spark of a story, where they learn how daily images and situations are transformed into a writeable idea. They then move on to building a story map, arranging its events, creating a fictional character, drawing its features, and using colors to express meaning. Participants also learn about the stages of book making and the types of pages and paper. Then, they conclude their participation by designing a cover that reflects the idea of their story and completing a short story work that combines writing and drawing.
As for Al Dhaid Public Library, it offers young men and women a program that focuses on developing the personal style of narration through workshops that invest imagination and visual and audio stimuli to build unconventional characters and train participants to retell the story in more than one style.
Participants also learn about the book’s journey from idea to launch before working on an applied project entitled “My Little Book.” Then they move to a laboratory for innovative ideas and reshaping daily situations in an imaginative way, all the way to designing the cover and presenting a first story project at the end of the camp.
At the Kalba Public Library, children discover the beginnings of human expression through workshops that address the first drawings on cave walls, ancient symbols, oral stories, and voices that give the story life. The program then progresses toward inspiration boxes that help children capture ideas from the things surrounding them and build a unique story plot. Then they go through the experience of comic books and cover design that links the word and the image in a fun and easy-to-interact template.
The course of the Khor Fakkan Public Library program deals with the stages of writing, design, and publishing in a practical manner. Participants begin by understanding “before the first letter,” then they practice transforming the idea into clear text, building the story, designing characters, and weaving events. The program later moves to visual narration and transforming the written text into a visual work, and then addresses the steps of preparing the book for publication, from editing, reviewing, and formatting to the final output and the mechanisms of presentation to the public.
At the Wadi Al-Hilu Public Library, children embark on the “Young Writer’s Journey” through workshops that stimulate the imagination and help them create story characters, determine the place and time, and transform daily situations into short stories. Participants also practice building a plot and using words and sentences to express their thoughts clearly. Then they participate in interactive linguistic activities that enhance vocabulary, self-confidence, and knowledge of the story’s elements of character, time, place, and plot, before presenting their works at the conclusion of the camp in a festive atmosphere that encourages them to continue reading and writing.
As for the Dibba Al-Hisn Public Library, it offers young people and adolescents a program that introduces them to several aspects related to book making, from types of paper and publications to page sizes, word harmony, and visual identity. The program also includes workshops in creative thinking and stimulating innovation that help participants develop their ideas and turn them into a personal book project that goes through the stages of writing, design, and choosing the cover, so that each participant ends with an initial copy that expresses his idea and style.
Sharjah Public Libraries will continue this creative journey through the 2026 Winter Camp under the slogan “Beyond the Book,” which highlights the transformation of texts into artistic, theatrical and visual works and encourages children and adolescents to produce projects inspired by books, during the period from 7 to 10 December.
