A generation inspiring a generation… A young man revives the heritage of gypsum sculpture and teaches it to children

In a scene that embodies cohesion between generations and a revival of ancient heritage, artist Haider Al-Alawi, who specializes in gypsum sculpture, dazzled visitors to the International Saudi Volunteer Day event in the city of Saihat, with his artistic creations and his participation with children in learning this traditional craft.
Al-Alawi, who is skilled at sculpting on gypsum in the traditional and contemporary manner, took inspiration for his work from the traditional decorations that adorned the homes of the Arabian Gulf in the past, especially in the eastern region. Al Alawi adds a modern touch to his works by combining these decorations with Arabic calligraphy in an innovative artistic way.

He stressed to Al-Youm the importance of reviving ancient handicrafts and teaching them to new generations, pointing out that gypsum sculpture is not just a craft, but rather an ancient art that carries within it a rich history and heritage.
He said: “I am keen to share my experience with children and teach them the basics of this craft, to contribute to passing on this precious heritage to future generations.”

He explained that his writings are inspired by ancient writers who preceded calligraphers in writing Qur’anic verses in simple lines, noting that he uses “free lines” in his works that do not carry a specific meaning, with the aim of stimulating thought and contemplation. He stressed the possibility of applying this idea to large models in public squares and parks.
Al-Alawi pointed out the difficulty of bringing all his tools to the event site due to their large size and the noise and dust they create during work.

He stressed the importance of engaging in volunteer work and its role in enhancing community cohesion and developing the spirit of initiative and cooperation among community members. He added, “We are here to teach young people and children, as well as those interested in this ancient and manual profession, and encourage them to take up manual labor and interest in it, and we encourage volunteer work and involvement in it in order to get to know others and to strengthen the bonds of society, and in this way the individual encourages others.”
