المملكة: Precision surgery by Buraidah specialist saves a resident’s life after a tracheal rupture
The medical team at King Fahd Specialist Hospital in Buraidah, one of the components of the Qassim Health Cluster, succeeded in saving the life of a 30-year-old resident, after he suffered a serious injury to the chest and respiratory system as a result of a heavy object (a crane) falling on him while working.
The Qassim Health Council explained that the injured person arrived at the emergency department in a critical condition, “life-saving,” as he suffers from a disturbance of consciousness and a severe lack of oxygen in the blood. He was placed on a ventilator, with large amounts of air under the skin and in the muscles of the neck and chest. and severe air leakage from ambulatory chest tubes.
Medical examinations
After conducting advanced medical examinations, including a bronchoscope, it was revealed that there was a complete severance of the main bronchus (trachea), and a laceration and separation of the right main bronchus.
Immediately, the patient was transferred to the operating room, where a delicate surgery was performed on him, “opening the right chest,” in three stages. The first stage included placing a ventilation tube in the left main bronchus, followed by the stage of restoration and repair of the right main bronchus, and finally the stage of reconnecting the two main bronchus with the bronchus. Basic aerobic and support repair with chest muscles.
Success of the operation
The group confirmed that the operation was successful, and the patient’s condition stabilized, thanks to God. Then, through the efforts of the thoracic surgery and anesthesia team, the oxygen level returned to normal. The patient was then transferred to intensive care.
A few days later, endoscopic examinations showed that the operation was completely successful and that there were no leaks. The patient left the hospital after spending a period of observation and is in good health, expressing his gratitude to the medical team that contributed to saving his life.
It is noteworthy that tracheal injuries represent rare cases among neck and chest accident patients (0.5-2%), but they threaten life at a rate of more than 50% if intervention is delayed, while success rates reach 90% when responding immediately, which highlights the importance of medical teams’ readiness to confront these emergencies. And saving lives.
