Wavell Ramkalawan, President of the Republic of Seychelles, stressed the pivotal role played by the UAE in enhancing global efforts to achieve sustainability and develop renewable energy solutions, noting that the UAE and Seychelles enjoy distinguished bilateral relations, especially in the field of combating climate challenges.
In a statement to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, on the sidelines of the World Future Energy Summit 2025, within Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, Ramkalawan added that the summit is an important platform for learning about the latest technological innovations and global experiences in the field of clean energy.
Ramkalawan extended his thanks and appreciation to President His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, may God protect him, for his generous and continuous support, stressing that Seychelles looks forward to benefiting from the UAE’s sustainable expertise and practices, in addition to benefiting from the latest advanced technologies that enhance energy efficiency.
Regarding cooperation with the Emirates, the President of Seychelles praised the distinguished economic and tourism relations between the two countries, noting that national carriers such as Emirates Airlines and Etihad Airways contribute effectively to the development of the tourism sector in Seychelles, stressing that Emirates Airlines is the first tourist carrier to Seychelles, and the largest contributor to the transport of goods. He said that these developments reflect the importance of the strategic partnership between the two countries in supporting the economy and tourism, stressing that Seychelles will remain open to any new cooperation with the UAE in the fields of advanced technology, renewable and clean energy to achieve sustainable development aspirations.
Regarding developments in the energy scene in Seychelles, His Excellency pointed out their aspiration to work on wind turbines using modern technology, which contributes to producing about 5 megawatts of electricity more efficiently even in low wind conditions, expecting that this project will in turn add more than 20 megawatts of electricity to the Seychelles network. He explained that Seychelles has achieved notable achievements in renewable and clean energy projects, including operating a photovoltaic station with a capacity of 5 megawatts and a wind turbine project with a capacity of 7.5 megawatts, which contributed to reducing dependence on fossil fuels, noting their plans to announce energy projects that support the progress that Seychelles is making in this regard. He revealed the clean energy projects under development, including two floating photovoltaic stations on the islands of Pralay and another island, with a total capacity of 12 megawatts, stressing that these projects contribute to transforming the islands into a completely green island, which enhances his country’s position as a pioneering country in the field of sustainability.
The President of the Republic of Seychelles added that these efforts will contribute to raising the proportion of renewable energy to more than a quarter of the total electricity consumption in the country, which currently amounts to about 70 megawatts, with the possibility of increasing it to 100 megawatts, pointing out that with the presence of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, Seychelles seeks to attract a number of Among the modern technologies on display, such as battery storage and others.
