Dr. Mowaffaq Tayyib, associate professor of family medicine and allergic diseases at the University of Jeddah, presented a package of medical guidelines necessary for asthma patients who intend to perform Umrah during the holy month of Ramadan, with the aim of enabling them to perform religious rituals with comfort and safety.

The most important medical tips

Dr. Tayyib stressed the need to take asthma patients for special precautions to ensure their safety during Umrah, especially in light of its coincidence with the blessed month of Ramadan, pointing to the importance of drinking sufficient quantities of fluids during the breakfast period to avoid drought, which may negatively affect their health.
He advised to perform Umrah in the evening as much as possible, to avoid exposure to strong sunlight during the day, which may increase the difficulty of breathing.
Dr. Tayyib stressed the importance of the pharmaceutical side, as asthma patients recommended taking two doses of asthma sprays before going to perform the rituals, while emphasizing the need to take the sprays with them for use when needed.

Cortisone pills as a precautionary measure

He added that it is also wise to carry cortisone pills as a precautionary measure, explaining that in the event of severe shortness of breath, – God forbid – as a result of crowding or other factors, the pilgrim can take two pills of cortisone and immediately go to the nearest medical center to seek help.
Dr. Tayyib concluded his speech by emphasizing that the main goal of these tips is to enable asthma patients to perform Umrah safely and reassures, wishing everyone acceptable fasting, facilitated Umrah, health and wellness.
