The death toll from the Burma and Thailand earthquake exceeds one thousand dead

More than a thousand people were killed in Burma and Thailand after an earthquake of 7.7 -magnitude, and a 6.4 -degree tremor that struck the two countries on Friday, according to the latest official figures.
The local authorities in Burma said today, Saturday, that more than 1,000 people were killed and 1670 were wounded.
The earthquake destroyed many buildings in Mandalay, the second largest city in Burma, which is near its center, and caused great damage to religious temples in the capital, Naibidao.
The Burmese authorities made an appeal to obtain international aid, and declared a state of emergency in six regions of the country.
In the Thai capital, Bangkok, the local authorities reduced the death toll from 10 to 6 six, with 22 people wounding, and 101 others lost.
Three victims were killed in the collapse of a government building under construction consisting of 30 floors, while the rescue device continues to search for survivors under the rubble.
Prime Minister Betongoran Chenatuatra announced the state of emergency in Bangkok, while some metro services and light railways were arrested.
In addition to Thailand, the population felt the earthquake in many countries adjacent to Burma, especially Vietnam, Malaysia, China, Cambodia, Bangladesh, and India, which led to the evacuation of many buildings.
In China, it was announced that damage was recorded in the provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan, which are located on the border with Burma, where the Chinese Earthquake Agency announced a 7.9 -magnitude earthquake.
The China News Agency (Xinhua) reported that two people were wounded in Ruwaili, about 300 km from the earthquake center, adding that nine people who were trapped in an elevator were rescued.
The United Nations allocated $ 5 million from the Emergency Fund for relief efforts in Burma, as the organization is working to assess the number of affected persons and the size of humanitarian needs.
Several countries have offered assistance, while a Chinese team of 37 rescuers arrived early Saturday to Yangon, the largest city in Burma.
Xinhua reported that the rescuers brought specialized equipment, including early seismic warning systems and drones.
Indian Minister of Foreign Affairs Supmanam Gaishhankar announced on the social networking site “X” that India sent a research and rescue team and a medical team.
For its part, the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Malaysia mobilized a team of 10 members of the National Disaster Management Agency and will send 40 additional people tomorrow, Sunday.
Russia also sent two planes with 120 rescuers and emergency supplies on board, according to the Russian news agency “Tass”.
