Sharjah, May 25 / WAM / The UAE continues through the Emirate of Sharjah to support the international nomination file “the cultural scene of prehistoric times in Al -Faya” to the list of World Heritage sites of the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture “UNESCO” in a new stage of its cultural and scientific career and in conjunction with the anticipation of the international community to announce the new list of listed sites.
This comes as an affirmation of the UAE’s commitment to protecting the human cultural heritage and enhancing the position of archaeological sites that contribute to the re -drawing of the features of ancient human history, as the “Al -Faya” site in the central region of the Emirate of Sharjah represents a living testimony to the first person’s ability to stay and adapt to harsh desert environments and embraces the oldest record of the human presence in the Arabian Peninsula dating back to more than 210 thousand years, which gives him exceptional value At the global level in the areas of archeology and anthropology.
The site was officially nominated in 2024 within the category of “cultural scene” and is currently subject to evaluation by the “World Heritage Center” of UNESCO as one of the most important important sites in the new nomination course, along with a limited number of sites around the world.
Sheikha Badour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Ambassador of the International Nomination File, leads the “cultural scene of prehistoric times in Al -Faya” efforts of the global definition of this nomination, as it reflects its role as a collective national effort aimed at upgrading the international position of the site and consolidating the leadership of the UAE in the areas of preserving human heritage and cultural diplomacy, and scientific progress.
Sheikha Badour Al Qasimi stressed the importance of nomination in enriching the world heritage, saying, “Al -Fayy offers one of the oldest integrated records of early human existence in the Arabian Peninsula more than 210,000 years old live archive that deepens our understanding of our identity and our roots and the way we have learned the arts of survival.”
She added that the nomination of Al -Faya to include it on the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage sites confirms the importance of preserving these old sites not only for its historical value but also because of the ability to redirect new generations and enhance their role in building our betrayal and our future .. I see that this nomination is an opportunity to improve the status of Al -Faya as a common human heritage for all peoples.
Over the course of more than 30 years, the Sharjah Antiquities Authority, in cooperation with the German University of Topingin and the University of Oxford Brooks, led a series of research and excavations in “Al -Faya” that resulted in the discovery of 18 successive geological classes, each documenting a different time of human activity on the site.
Discoveries show that Al -Faya was not only a passing passage of migrations, but rather a frequent human settlement destination during the appropriate climatic periods, thanks to the availability of water from springs and valleys and the abundance of flint to make tools and natural shelter in the mountains, which made the site an incubating environment for human stability in prehistoric times.
Al -Fayy gained an exceptional global value through these unique aspects of discoveries that emphasized the importance of the site and its role in providing a rare and integrated record for human survival and overcoming the climate and environmental challenges that faced it.
For his part, His Excellency Issa Youssef, Director General of the Sharjah Antiquities Authority, stressed that the protection of “Al -Fayya” is based on the Sharjah Cultural Heritage Law No. 4 of 2020, which guarantees the preservation of the site for future generations and over the course of more than 30 years of careful research and cooperation with a group of international experts. He added, “With the progress of the nomination of Al -Faya to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites, it is important to emphasize that our cooperative efforts made this project a global effort that connects the past with the present and contributes to enriching international literature for archaeological discoveries, so this site carries an exceptional value in the world and not only for the Emirate of Sharjah and the UAE.”
The UAE has developed a comprehensive management plan to protect the “Al -Fayya” site, which will direct efforts to preserve the site, conduct research, and organize the movement of visitors in it from 2024 to 2030. This plan is in line with the standards of UNESCO World Heritage sites and ensures that the site is preserved while continuing to excavate, explore and scientific and educational research.
