Fears of South Korea’s departure from its allies with Mayung’s assumption of the presidency

The new South Korean President, Lee Jay Meong, is known for his leftist directions that accompanied him on his political career, which was reflected in his positive stances towards both China and North Korea, and his conservative position towards the United States.

Some of his previous statements have sparked controversy, including describing the American military presence in South Korea as a “occupation”, as well as indicating that China has the right to make its decisions on Taiwan.

Mongols also raised suspicions related to transferring an amount estimated at eight million dollars to North Korea while he was assuming the position of governor of Jeongghi, a charge of his deputy actually convicted of that period.

Political desire

Despite this, during his recent election campaign, Mayung expressed his support for the United States, and praised the tripartite security cooperation between South Korea, the United States and Japan, prompting some American observers to describe him as “pragmatic” and central trends.

But this optimism may be a reflection of a political desire more than an accurate reading of his real stances, as similar expectations have already been raised about political leaders, as reformists before the experience was proven by the opposite, and from this perspective, some believe that the Mung’s speech in the election campaign may not be an accurate indication of his actual policies.

One party

Among the indicators that cause concern for some observers is the appointment of Munaa, Kim Min Sook as Prime Minister, a controversial past, as he was a hard -line activist students in the 1980s, and participated in anti -United States protests that led to his imprisonment. He was also rejected by an American entry visa on one time because of his positions, and he is said to have accused the United States of responsibility for the “Corona” pandemic.

It is noteworthy that the President of the Democratic Party, the “Democratic Party”, controls the majority of the National Assembly (Parliament), which gives it a wide ability to implement its political agendas, including constitutional and judicial reforms that may include the formation of the Supreme Court.

Mayong calls for “the reform of the democratic system” and the unification of the people, but its critics see in these calls as a prelude to the consolidation of the authority of one party, and it may be closer closer to China, North Korea and Russia.

Some observers are afraid that this shift may lead to the erosion of the historical alliance between South Korea and the United States, especially if it prevailed in South Korea as a political stream that sees in Washington a opponent, preferably cooperating with its strategic competitors.

A new political reality

Despite these concerns, the White House affirmed its commitment to the alliance between the two countries, describing the recent elections as “free and fair”, while expressing its concern about the Chinese interference in democratic processes.

On the other hand, South Korean activists pointed out that there are electoral violations, as happened in previous elections, but they did not receive enough attention from the American or foreign press, which dealt with these allegations as baseless theories.

In light of this complex scene, the United States may find itself in front of a new political reality in South Korea, which was one of its most prominent allies in the region, while facing increasing challenges from China in Northeast Asia. If Washington is keen to preserve this alliance, it may be necessary to review its strategy to support political pluralism and democratic institutions in South Korea, while seeking to ensure that relations remain on firm and stable foundations.
