"Backup" A major defense line in front of cyber threats

Abu Dhabi, August 17/ WAM/ The “backup” is one of the most prominent major defense lines in front of cyber threats by contributing to reducing data loss, preserving customer data and sensitive files and reducing the chances of security breakthroughs, in addition to enabling institutions to respond to the rapid incident.

The existence of a system of reliable backup copies gives highly ready -made audit and compliance operations for organizational standards and helps them to ensure the continuity of services provided to the public and customers.

The importance of backups in particular is highlighted in the contexts in which ransom software is aimed at weak systems, as companies face one of two options, either to lose data permanently, or pay large sums of money as a ransom.

It was estimated that institutions that do not have an effective backup system may be exposed to financial losses that exceed 186,000 dirhams in each cyber attack, which is a high cost that may affect the continuity of the institution’s operations and the functioning of its work.

In light of the importance of raising awareness of cyber risks, the Cyber Security Council launched the UAE government “the cyber pulse initiative”, which includes weekly awareness programs throughout the year to raise awareness of cybersecurity, and provide guidance to how to face various cyber threats.

The campaign targets individuals and institutions alike to increase cyber awareness and enhance readiness, flexibility and cyber culture.

The Council pointed out that the first awareness week of the campaign begins by discussing the importance of the backup process for the important and sensitive files of institutions and companies as one of the basic digital protection pillars, under the slogan “backup is no longer an option/but a duty” in order to ensure the continuity of business and reduce the damage caused by electronic attacks or sudden technical faults.

The Council stressed the importance of setting a strict schedule to repeat the process of backup, explaining that conducting the daily copies of customer data and operational data aims to ensure the continuity of business, while the weekly copies of operational data contribute to enhancing the stability of the digital work environment in the medium and long term.

The Council stressed the importance of adopting a comprehensive strategy for reserve copying as an integral part of the digital protection plan for any party, whether it is a large or small institution, explaining that this strategy includes the ability to restore the system and operate it smoothly after any cyber or technical incident.

The Council called on all institutions to review its current plans and ensure that the backup is carried out periodically, while testing its effectiveness regularly to ensure the full readiness of any emergency.

Studies have revealed that institutions that apply regular, effective and powerful backup strategies that can recover from the effects of electronic attacks at a speed of more than others by 50%, which makes the backup copies a difference in the face of digital and electronic attacks and threats, and reducing the time of disruption and costs resulting from it, which reduces the losses that are exposed to institutions and companies.

The basic value of backup copies in enabling institutions is to restore sensitive operations and data when needed and can also be used to detect fraudulent operations and restore missing data quickly and efficiently. Through conducting regular backup copies of information, customer data and operational data, institutions guarantee the continuation of their work without interruption even in light of emergency threats.
