The Yonhap News Agency quoted the Korean Statistics Authority data, that the number of workers in the country reached 28.97 million people last month, an increase of 166 thousand jobs compared to the same month last year.
She added that August also represents an annual basis for the eighth month in a row, noting that the continued decline in employment in the manufacturing and construction sectors despite the total growth.
The manufacturing sector, which is the backbone of the local economy, lost 61 thousand jobs in August compared to the previous year, which led to the continued slowdown for the fourteenth month in a row, and the construction sector continued to suffer, as it lost 132 thousand jobs to continue its decline for 16 consecutive months.
The total job growth in the past month was largely supported by the employment of the elderly.
The jobs increased for the age of 60 and more than 401 thousand from the previous year, while increasing among the thirties by 96 thousand, and the youngest age groups witnessed a remarkable decrease.
The jobs of people in the twenties decreased by 195,000 in exchange for a loss of 130,000 jobs in July. The jobs of those in the 1940s decreased by 73 thousand jobs.
The Statistics Authority indicated that these age groups are also witnessing a decrease in the population, which leads to a decrease in the employment rate.
