There are “some progress” in talks with Syria

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the beginning of a cabinet meeting today, Sunday, that contacts are continuing with Syria, and that it has achieved “some progress”, but the gap is still great.

This comes after it was reported that the United States is putting pressure on Israel to give up some of its demands to reach a rapid understanding, and against the background of expectations that the agreement will be announced this week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, which will be attended by both Netanyahu and Syrian President Ahmed Al -Shara.

The Syrian president said that the ongoing talks may lead to results “in the coming days”, stressing that the security agreement is necessary and must respect Syrian sovereignty, airspace, and the territorial integrity, and be under the supervision of the United Nations.

Syria hopes that the agreement will include the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the south, and to stop the air strikes launched by Israel inside the Syrian territories.

While Israel insists on staying in some strategic sites it controlled after the date of December 8, most notably the Syrian side of Jabal Al -Sheikh.

For its part, Syria shows a preparation for an agreement similar to the 1974 disengagement agreement, which established a demilitarized zone between the two countries after the 1973 war.

Despite progress, Israeli sources indicate that the agreement is still completely immature, and there are gaps between the demands and the proposals presented by Damascus.
