Manchester United owner gives coach Amorim 3 years to prove himself

Coach Ruben Amorim has been given three years to prove himself at Manchester United, after the club’s co-owner, Jim Ratcliffe, insisted he had not made a hasty decision about the future of the Portuguese, who is facing increasing pressure.
Amorim faced constant speculation about the possibility of his dismissal throughout this season, in light of United’s continued shaky performance and floundering from one crisis to another.
The former Portuguese Sporting coach, who was appointed by Ratcliffe in November 2024, admitted earlier that he thought about leaving during the club’s worst period.
United finished last season in fifteenth place in the English Premier League, their lowest position since the 1973-1974 season, and also missed the opportunity to participate in the Champions League after losing the final of the European League (Europa League) to their then-struggling rival Tottenham.
United’s performance was not much better this season, as it occupies tenth place after losing three times out of its first seven league matches. It also exited the League Cup competition by losing to fourth-tier Gressby.
“He has not had a good season,” Ratcliffe said on The Business podcast, produced by The Times and The Sunday Times. “Robin needs to prove that he is a great coach in three years. That is the position I am adopting.”
He added, “I don’t understand journalism sometimes. They want instant success. They think it’s like turning on a light switch. You press the switch and suddenly everything is perfect.”
He continued, “You cannot manage a club the size of Manchester United with quick and hasty reactions based on the opinions of some journalists from time to time.”
The Red Devils have not won the league title since 2013, while their last continental title goes back to the Europa League in 2017.
When asked what would happen if the Glazer family, which still owns a majority stake, asked him to fire Amorim, Ratcliffe replied: “That will not happen.”
