Real Madrid legend Santamaria dies at the age of 96

The former Real Madrid player and former coach of the Spanish national team in the 1982 World Cup, Jose Emilio Santamaria, has died at the age of 96, according to what the “Royal” club announced on Wednesday.
Real Madrid mourned “one of the greatest legends of our club and world football.”
Santamaria, who played as a centre-back, joined Real Madrid in 1957 from Uruguayan club Nacional, and played during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez said: “Alongside Di Stéfano, Puskas, Gento and Cuba, that team began to build the Real Madrid legend.”
Santamaria was born in Uruguay, and won four European Cup titles with the Spanish capital club in 1958, 1959, 1960 and 1966, in addition to six Spanish League titles and other tournaments.
He played 25 international matches with the Uruguay national team, before obtaining Spanish citizenship and representing Spain in the 1962 World Cup, then later coaching the national team.
