Health reviews Egypt’s efforts to reduce the harm of narcotic drugs at a conference in South Africa

The Ministry of Health and Population participated in the activities of the 13th International Conference on “Health and Hepatitis in Drug Users”, which was held in Cape Town, South Africa, during the period from 13 to 17 October 2025, in the presence of a wide range of public health experts, care providers and policy makers from various countries of the world.

 

Dr. Hossam explained Abdul Ghaffar, the Ministry’s official spokesman, said that the conference focused on the concepts of reducing the harm of narcotic substances, improving the health and well-being of patients recovering from addiction, in addition to enhancing international cooperation in exchanging knowledge and experiences, and defending effective practices and policies to unify global efforts in this vital field.

 

In this context, he pointed out “Abdul Ghaffar” To the participation of the delegation of the General Secretariat of Mental Health and Addiction Treatment in a high-level meeting within the conference, to discuss ways to enhance access to harm reduction services and direct antiviral treatments (DAAs) across the African continent, by developing the necessary market policies and strategies to ensure fair and equitable distribution of these vital services.

 

For his part, Dr. Ayman stressed Abbas, Head of the Central Administration of the General Secretariat of Mental Health and Addiction Treatment, said that the sessions addressed the main challenges facing the countries of the continent in providing harm reduction services, while presenting practical and comprehensive regional solutions to expand their scope, ensuring their sustainability and achieving the greatest benefit for the target groups.

“Abbas” added; The outcomes of the conference included preparing an executive summary containing practical, applicable recommendations that support the development and expansion of harm reduction services and improving access to treatment and care, within the framework of enhancing regional integration and international cooperation in the field of mental health and addiction treatment.

 

In conclusion… the General Secretariat of Mental Health and Addiction Treatment affirmed its keenness to effectively interact in International forums, and transferring successful Egyptian experiences and expertise, in line with the state’s directions towards supporting the right to health for all, and achieving the goals of sustainable development and the “Egypt 2030” vision.
