Egypt hosts the regional feasibility study meeting on irradiation techniques

The Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is hosting the regional meeting on “Developing a Feasibility Study for the Acquisition of Irradiation Technology,” during the period from October 19 to 23, 2025, with the participation of a group of international experts and representatives of member states within the African Projects “African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research and Development.” And training in the field of nuclear science and technology. The fields of industry, agriculture and medicine.
Dr. Amr El Hajj, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Authority and the national coordinator of the meeting, confirmed that Egypt is the leading country in the region in the field of operating reactors and irradiation facilities, noting that the International Atomic Energy Agency relies on the Egyptian experience as a successful model for applications of radiation technology in the fields Al-Hajj said, “This regional meeting comes within the framework of the Authority’s vision to maximize the benefit from irradiation techniques in the service of society, industry, and scientific research, and through it we seek to transfer expertise between the participating countries and develop clear frameworks for feasibility studies that ensure the sustainability of these facilities from an economic and technical perspective.
In turn, Dr. Hedaya Ahmed Kamel, Vice President of the Authority for Training and International Cooperation, said, The Authority has a strong infrastructure that includes gamma irradiation centers and an electronic accelerator. He explained that the Authority aims, through this cooperation, to expand the base for safe industrial use of these technologies, which contributes to raising the quality of Egyptian products and increasing export opportunities. He pointed out that the outcomes of this meeting contribute to developing a unified regional guide for preparing feasibility studies for irradiation facilities, which enhances the efficiency of exploiting this technology in sustainable development, and supports Egypt’s position as a distinguished regional center for training and application in the fields of peaceful nuclear technology.
The meeting’s agenda includes a series of workshops and technical sessions, including the presentation of country reports on progress in preparing feasibility studies, lectures on financial analysis and cost systems, discussions on the different types of irradiation facilities in Egypt and their research and commercial purposes, a field visit to the gamma irradiation unit in Alexandria, in addition to… Practical sessions on analyzing economic feasibility and determining key performance indicators (KPIs).
A number of international experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency participate in running the sessions, including Dr. Mohamed Mohib, Dr. Arabi Hungary, and Florent Kantz, in addition to an elite group of representatives of the African and Arab countries that are members of the project. The meeting witnesses the participation of experts from 13 countries: “Egypt, Algeria, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Libya, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, and Tanzania.”
