The United Nations warns of the dangers of continued violence in Sudan

At the daily press conference, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric reported that fighting had escalated in recent days in North and West Darfur states, with reports of drone strikes and clashes in several areas.

He added that reports indicated yesterday, Sunday, that at least seven civilians were killed in a drone strike on the main market in Saraf Umra, North Darfur, and raids in El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur state, also caused casualties.

The International Organization for Migration estimates that more than 3,000 people were newly displaced in North Darfur last week alone, including 1,500 people from the besieged city of El Fasher, and 1,500 from Abu Qamra, following renewed fighting in that village.

Civilians bear the brunt of the violence

The United Nations spokesman explained that tensions also escalated sharply in the Kordofan region, where nearly 1,000 people were displaced from the town of Lagawa in West Kordofan state last Saturday, due to worsening insecurity.

Meanwhile, the town of Dilling in South Kordofan and the city of Kadugli, the state capital, remain under siege, with supply routes cut off and shortages of basic goods worsening by the day.

Dujarric reported that clashes in Blue Nile State between armed groups led to the displacement of 600 people from the town of Bout in Tadamon locality last week.

The UN spokesman said: “Civilians across Sudan continue to bear the brunt of this ongoing violence.”.

He stressed that despite the many challenges, humanitarian colleagues continue to provide vital assistance to displaced people in areas that the United Nations and its partners are able to reach safely.

Dujarric said: “We once again call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, the protection of civilians, and unimpeded humanitarian access wherever needed.”.
