Opening of the upgraded Zakher Interchange in Al Ain at a cost of 185 million dirhams

ABU DHABI, 21st October, 2017 (WAM) – The Department of Municipalities and Transport announced the official opening of the developed Zakher Interchange in the Al Ain region, in a qualitative new achievement that comes within the integrated program to modernize and develop infrastructure across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, keeping pace with the rapid urban and population growth in the region.
The cost of implementing the project amounted to 185 million dirhams, and it took 22 months to complete. It included converting the existing roundabout into a four-way intersection equipped with traffic lights, with the aim of reducing traffic journey times and enhancing road safety levels.
The project also included the construction of a tunnel that includes three lanes in each direction, with a length of 900 metres, passing under Hazza bin Sultan Street, which is a major artery linking the north and south of Al Ain city.
The intersection connects the Falaj Hazza area to the east and the Zakher area to the west, and also connects the Hazza Bridge roundabout in the north and Shaab Al Ashkhar roundabout in the south, to contribute to improving the flow of traffic between the various neighborhoods of the city.
The implementation of the project contributed to reducing travel time between the areas of Zakher, Shaab Al-Ashkhar, Naama, Ain Al-Fayda, Shu’bah Al-Wata and the northern regions, especially the private school area.
The project is a qualitative addition to the series of strategic projects implemented by the department and its affiliated entities, within its vision to improve the quality of transportation and provide a modern, safe and sustainable road network.
His Excellency Engineer Abdullah Hamdan Al Ameri, Executive Director of the Infrastructure Sector at Al Ain City Municipality, confirmed that the project embodies the department’s firm commitment to developing a pioneering infrastructure according to the highest international standards, noting that it constitutes a fundamental pillar within Al Ain Municipality’s efforts to provide an effective and sustainable road network that serves the city’s residents and visitors, as well as supporting the comprehensive development movement witnessed by the region.
