المملكة: Updating 45 categories.. Saudi Arabia is preparing for the “Nice Classification” meeting for trademarks

The Saudi Authority called Intellectual Property The public and those interested should submit their views on the proposed amendments to the international “Nice Classification”, as part of the Kingdom’s preparations to participate in the annual meeting of the Committee of Classification Experts “CE36”, scheduled to be held soon.
This step aims to collect the views of stakeholders on the proposals put forward to update the classification, in a way that ensures keeping pace with developments in the goods and services sectors, and contributes to In improving the efficiency of Trademarks within the Kingdom, in preparation for submitting these observations and discussing them during the international meeting.
Trademark Registration
The “Nice Classification”, whose agreement was signed in 1957 AD, is the approved international framework for classifying goods and services for the purposes of registering trademarks among member states, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia officially joined it in 2021 AD.
This classification requires trademark applicants to specify the goods or services on which the mark will be used within specific categories, which contributes to clarifying the scope of legal protection for the mark.
The classification includes 45 main categories, including 34 categories dedicated to products and 11 categories to services, and each category includes a definitional introduction and basic terms that explain the nature of the goods or services covered by it.

The Nice Committee of Experts meets annually with the participation of representatives of the States Parties to discuss the proposed amendments to the classification, which include transferring goods and services between different categories, or deleting and adding new terms, as well as updating the alphabetical list and introducing the necessary explanatory notes.
