Signed by 65 countries… Details of the first global agreement to combat cybercrime

In the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, the United Nations opened the door for signing the first global agreement on , to combat the rising misuse of technology in crimes including terrorism, human trafficking, financial crimes and drug smuggling.
So far, 65 countries have signed the convention, which will enter into force 90 days after the deposit of the 40th instrument of ratification with the United Nations, following its adoption in December 2024 after five years of negotiations.
Cybercrime
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres stressed that the agreement represents a binding tool to strengthen common defenses against , noting that it guarantees the protection of all countries without exception.
The agreement establishes a global framework for exchanging electronic evidence, and criminalizes crimes such as electronic fraud, child abuse via the Internet, and non-consensual publication of images, in addition to establishing an international cooperation network that works around the clock to support investigation and judicial cooperation.
The Executive Director stressed United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Ghada Wali is changing the features of organized crime, and the Convention represents a vital tool for enhancing international cooperation.
