The King of Belgium takes a private tour of Saqqara and Abusir after the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum

On Sunday, King Philippe of Belgium made a quick visit to the archaeological areas of Saqqara and Abusir, as part of his current official visit to Egypt to participate in the celebration of the official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, in order to get acquainted closely with some of the most important and unique archaeological monuments that Egypt abounds.

 

 

The visit began in the archaeological area of Saqqara, where Dr. Mohamed Ismail Khaled accompanied him. The Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, on a tour of the region that included the two cemeteries of “Mereruka” And "attack me" In the ancient Saqqara cemetery, the King of Belgium expressed great admiration for the colorful inscriptions preserved in wonderful condition that embody the details of daily life, customs and traditions of the ancient Egyptian, stressing his admiration for the fine artistic craftsmanship and documentary accuracy that distinguished ancient Egyptian art.

After that, the King of Belgium went to the archaeological area of Abusir to visit the pyramids of the kings of the Fifth Dynasty, known as the pyramids of the Sun Kings, where he listened to a detailed explanation from Dr. Muhammad Ismail Khaled about the philosophy of building these pyramids, and the most prominent recent archaeological discoveries in the region, most notably the discovery for the first time of a series of storerooms inside the pyramid of King Sahure, which contributes to revealing the most important features of the funerary architecture of this king, who is considered the second king of the Fifth Dynasty (2400 BC). And the first to use Abu Sir as a site for his funerary group.

King Philip expressed his deep appreciation for the grandeur and creativity of Egypt’s antiquities that he saw, stressing that this visit deepened his connection with Egyptian civilization. He also expressed his great happiness with his experience, and promised another visit to Egypt soon to complete his tour of the Saqqara and Abu Sir region and see more of their unique landmarks that he was unable to visit during this short visit.
