The Security Council lifts sanctions on the Syrian President and the Minister of Interior

The UN Security Council adopted a resolution to lift sanctions imposed on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, in a step that precedes his scheduled meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House next Monday.
The resolution, drafted by the United States and voted on Thursday, also included lifting sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab. It received the support of 14 members of the Council, while China abstained from voting.
The US Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, welcomed the decision, considering that it “constitutes a clear political message confirming that Syria is entering a new phase in its history.”
During the past months, Washington has called for a review of the sanctions regime imposed on Syria, considering that the regional situation calls for a new approach.
In the same context, White House Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt announced that Trump’s meeting with Sharaa comes within the US President’s efforts to “promote world peace,” explaining that the decision to lift sanctions reflects “Washington’s desire to give the new Syrian leadership a real chance for peace.”
