Launching of the Arab-German Conference for Sciences and Humanities at the University of Sharjah

Sharjah, November 17, 2017 – Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, the activities of the Arab-German Conference for Sciences and Humanities were launched at the University of Sharjah, organized by the university and in cooperation with the Arab-German Academy for Young Researchers in Sciences and Humanities (AGYA).
An elite group of scientists, experts, and university presidents from the UAE, Germany, and several Arab countries will participate in the conference, along with representatives of international organizations, and more than 130 researchers and academics from more than 40 Arab and German universities and research institutions.
The conference will continue until November 20, and aims to strengthen Arab-German research cooperation and expand scientific partnership in the fields of health sciences, medicine, innovation, technology, space, sustainable smart cities, and the humanities and social sciences, in addition to enabling young researchers to build sustainable cooperation networks.
His Excellency Dr. Essam Al-Din Ajami, Director of the University, confirmed in the opening session that organizing the conference in cooperation with the German Arab Academy and the University of Khor Fakkan reflects the university’s vision, the foundations of which were laid by its president, His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, which is based on scientific openness, strengthening bridges of communication between civilizations through applied knowledge, and encouraging academic and cultural dialogue.
He added that the conference enhances Arab-German research cooperation and opens horizons for new initiatives in higher education, scientific research and innovation, announcing the inauguration of the regional office of the Arab-German Academy for young researchers at the University of Sharjah to be a headquarters for the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and a bridge of communication between researchers in the region and their counterparts in Germany.
Her Excellency Sibyl Pfaff, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, expressed her thanks to the University of Sharjah for hosting the conference, stressing the importance of scientific cooperation between the Arab world and Germany and its role in confronting global challenges and promoting innovation.
Dr. Eric Hansalek from the German Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space stressed that the conference provides a platform for deepening scientific communication and developing joint projects that serve communities.
For her part, Dr. Gina Al-Feki, Co-Chair of the Advisory Board of the German Youth Academy and President of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology in Egypt, explained that the Emirate of Sharjah’s hosting of the conference reflects its position in supporting education and scientific research, stressing that the conference’s slogan “Communication in Science – Today, Tomorrow, Future” embodies the Academy’s mission to enhance cooperation between researchers, exchange data and ideas, and find common solutions to issues such as water security, health, and sustainable cities.
The opening session witnessed the exchange of shields between the university and the academy, in addition to showing an introductory video about the two institutions, celebrating the joining of new members to the academy for the year 2025, and announcing the graduation of a new batch from the academy. A number of scientific figures from Arab and European universities also participated in the session.
The first day included a discussion session on Arab-German research cooperation and the role of universities in promoting scientific communication between East and West, in addition to the launch of interactive research laboratories that addressed issues of sustainable smart cities, the study of the date palm from a scientific and humanitarian perspective, and the role of higher education institutions in building peace and community service, where participants presented innovative research proposals aimed at finding common solutions to contemporary scientific and humanitarian challenges.
