المملكة: An expected amendment to the traffic system… creating license plates for antique and sports vehicles

An explanatory memorandum issued by Public Security at the Ministry of Interior revealed a proposal to allow the import of antique and sports vehicles into the Kingdom, even if they do not meet the energy efficiency requirements or the age currently allowed for import.

The proposal aims primarily to enable the use of these vehicles to travel on the roads in a regular manner. To achieve this, the memorandum included a proposal to amend Traffic System by adding a new paragraph to Article Seven that stipulates the introduction of “Archaeological vehicle plates.”

Ancient vehicle plates

The proposed amendment includes including “antiquarian vehicle plates” in the vehicle plate fee schedule, and adding the “antiquarian vehicle” classification to the traffic license and ownership transfer fee schedules, with fees determined based on the original vehicle category mentioned in the schedules.

This trend comes in response to the desire of a segment of beneficiaries and those interested in owning antique vehicles, and to keep pace with the regulations in force in many countries that allow the entry of such vehicles.

And to distinguish them from other categories, it is proposed The amendment also deleted the phrase “ancient historical” from paragraph “8” of Article Seven, and modified its name in Table Feesto become the “Vehicle Acquisition Board”, which contributes to establishing a more precise regulatory framework.

Learning about international experiences

The proposal was based on an in-depth and attached study that looked at several international experiences in countries such as America, Canada, Britain, France, and Switzerland, in addition to the experiences of Gulf countries such as Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the Emirates.

This organization is expected to contribute to supporting the security and traffic sectors in monitoring these vehicles, and providing a safe environment by creating plates designated for antique and sports vehicles. The legal basis for this proposal is based on Article Twenty-Two of the Cabinet Regulations.
