A national partnership to develop an intelligent navigation system within the Emirates Moon Exploration Project

Dubai, November 21, WAM / The Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre, in cooperation with the Institute of Technology Innovation and Aspire, affiliated with the Advanced Technology Research Council in Abu Dhabi, announced a strategic partnership to develop an advanced navigation system based on artificial intelligence, which enhances the capabilities of future explorers within the Emirates Moon Exploration Project, during the activities of the Dubai Airshow 2025.

The new system is one of the most complex space systems being developed within the country, as it includes a radiation-resistant computer and intelligent software that gives the explorer the ability to move independently on the surface of the moon.

The system relies on built-in cameras and advanced technologies to monitor the surrounding environment and automatically avoid obstacles, ensuring the highest levels of safety and efficiency in dangerous and challenging space environments.

Dr. Hamad Al Marzouqi, Director of the Emirates Lunar Exploration Project, stressed that cooperation is a qualitative step in strengthening national capabilities and developing technologies that raise the scientific value of future missions, noting that enabling the explorer to understand and analyze his surroundings in real time constitutes an influential shift in exploration techniques.

For his part, Dr. Elias Tsosanis, senior researcher at the Space and Propulsion Systems Research Center at the Institute of Technological Innovation, explained that the partnership enhances the country’s ability to design and qualify space systems with a national footprint that support future exploration missions.

Andrew Strafford, Executive Director of Aspire, stressed that the cooperation embodies the power of national partnerships in enabling scientific and engineering capabilities that contribute to the UAE’s leadership in space technologies.

The project comes within the national ambition to develop artificial intelligence solutions in the space sector, in line with the National Space Strategy 2030, and with the support of the Communications and Information Technology Sector Development Fund of the Communications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority.
