A new system for controlling construction waste in Cairo

Dr. Ibrahim Saber, Governor of Cairo, announced the allocation of a unified official dump for construction waste next to the Central Ring Road, in cooperation with the National Road Company, to be the only approved body for dumping waste.

The governor stressed that contractors must obtain permits for transporting waste and link them to the site, along with providing proof of safe disposal inside the dump, stressing the application of deterrent penalties for violators.

The governor said that Cairo had taken a package of measures to eliminate the phenomenon of random throwing of litter in the streets and new axis, which the state spent billions to develop, stressing that this civilized face should not be allowed to be distorted, and thanked the armed forces and the police for supporting efforts to restore discipline.

Saber explained that the dump will be available free of charge for a month, and that a nominal fee will be collected later to contribute to its operation. He pointed out that the site was carefully chosen to be close to most of the ongoing development projects, making it easier for companies to transport waste and limit the spread of litter on the roads.

The governor indicated that fixed routes will be determined for the garbage trucks in coordination with the Security and Traffic Directorate and the Utilities Police, while prohibiting their movement during peak times and requiring them to cover the load, in addition to publishing guide signs showing the way to reach the dump.

He also directed the activation of a strict monitoring system through rapid intervention units and night campaigns at the neighborhood level, with the use of surveillance cameras on the axes to monitor any violation immediately after it occurs, and to take immediate measures that include withdrawing licenses and confiscating the violating cars.

The governor explained that the new contracts with neighborhoods will include a clause requiring contractors to provide proof of safe disposal of construction waste.

Citizens and contractors will also be made aware of the harmful effects of random dumping on roads and the environment, with committed companies being given priority in government contracts.

At the conclusion of his statements, the governor stressed daily monitoring of all roads and axes, and submitting continuous video reports, stressing that periodic assessments of compliance rates are conducted to prevent any violations from appearing in the future.
