المملكة: 1000 successful operations… Robotic surgeries enhance the capabilities of King Abdulaziz University

conducted King Abdulaziz University, represented by the University Hospital, more than 1,000 successful surgical operations, within the Robotic surgery At the University Hospital, Dr. Major Anwar Azhar, said that the operations conducted were "Quality and complexity"It included a major expansion in the scope of surgical specialties, namely kidney and urinary tract surgery (the leading and most widely used specialty), gynecological surgery, general surgery, thoracic surgery, and heart surgery, which recently joined the program.
He pointed out that many of these operations were carried out. "For the first time in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the entire region" In various specialties, including, for example, reconstructive ureter surgeries, vascular surgery for the kidneys, and complex operations in the specialty of liver and pancreas surgery, led by Dr. Murad Al-Jafari.
The University Hospital is one of the first hospitals in the Kingdom and the Middle East to adopt robotic technology, and it performed the first operation in April 2007 using the system. "DaVinci Standard"The year 2018 witnessed the introduction of the new generation "DaVinci X"Which contributed to a steady and significant increase in the number and scope of operations.
The success of robotic surgery
The head of the Robotic Surgery Committee at the University Hospital confirmed that the success of robotic surgery is "Integrated team effort" It is not limited to the surgeon, praising the role of the Department of Operations, Anesthesia, Qualified Nursing and Medical Engineering in ensuring the permanent operational readiness of the system.
Regarding the advantages of robotic surgery for the patient, Azhar explained that the use of robotic technology in the hospital is based on an evidence-based medicine approach, with the aim of achieving the best possible treatment results while ensuring the optimal use of the technology, noting that the robot, which is completely controlled by the surgeon, provides a three-dimensional, magnified view that is ten times clearer than the naked eye, and filters out hand vibrations. The surgeon can translate the movement accurately, with the tools being able to rotate 360 degrees, allowing access to difficult angles.
He pointed out the benefits of the technology for the patient, in terms of reducing blood loss and pain, a shorter stay in the hospital, a faster return to normal life, and better cosmetic results.
The hospital’s plan for expansion
In light of the great development in the health field in the Kingdom, Azhar revealed the hospital’s plan for expansion, which is based on two axes, namely increasing the absorptive capacity by supporting The hospital is developing technology, and expanding fellowship programs specialized in robotic surgery to consolidate the hospital’s role as an educational center, and to graduate a generation of skilled surgeons.
The hospital aspires for robotic surgery to become the first and primary choice for cases that allow it clinically and technically, and it also looks forward to further horizons such as remote surgery (tele-surgery).
