The National Council for Childhood and Motherhood announced that it had thwarted an attempt to marry a child before she reached the legal age in Fayoum Governorate, stressing that all necessary measures would be taken to protect her and ensure her safety.
Dr. Sahar Al-Sunbati, President of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, explained that the Council’s General Administration for Child Relief had received an urgent report indicating that a 17-year-old girl, residing in Fayoum Governorate, was being forced into marriage. From someone, in addition to her attempting suicide more than once as a result of family pressures, in addition to being deprived of completing her education.
Al-Sunbati confirmed that Child marriage is a crime that threatens the security and safety of the child and constitutes a flagrant violation of his rights, stressing that the Council will continue to confront these practices within the framework of its national role to protect children from all forms of violence, exploitation and abuse.
For his part, Dr. Wael Abdel Razek, Secretary-General of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, explained that upon receiving the complaint, the Child Protection Unit in Fayoum Governorate was notified to verify the authenticity of the report, and the veracity of the report was confirmed. The incident.
The Child, Elderly and Persons with Disabilities Protection Unit at the Public Prosecutor’s Office was also notified, and the Public Prosecution Office began its investigations into the incident.
Abdel Razek indicated that the necessary legal measures had been taken, including signing legal pledges on the family not to complete the marriage before the child reaches legal age, and obliging the family to take good care of her and provide the necessary support.
In the same context, Sabri Othman, Director of the General Administration for Child Relief, confirmed that the incident is a clear violation of the provisions of Article (80) of the Constitution, which obliges the state to protect the child from all forms of violence, abuse, and exploitation, as well as Article (96) of the Children’s Law No. 12 of 1996, as amended by Law No. 126 of 2008 regarding child exposure.
