No solutions.. Manchester United dismisses Amorim 14 months after his appointment

Manchester United dismissed its Portuguese coach, Ruben Amorim, from his position 14 months after his appointment, according to what was announced Monday by the sixth-ranked English Premier League club.
The decision follows escalating tensions between Amorim and United management, including director of football Jason Wilcox, in recent days.
The announcement came in an official statement issued by United: “With Manchester United occupying sixth place in the English Premier League, the club’s management has reluctantly taken the decision that the time has come to make a change.”
He added, “This decision will give the team the best opportunity to achieve the best possible position in the English Premier League.”
He continued, “The club would like to thank Robin for his contributions and wish him the best in the future.”
Former Scottish midfielder Darren Fletcher, who is currently the coach of the United under-18 team, will lead the team against Burnley on Wednesday.
The “Red Devils” played 20 matches under Amorim’s leadership in the league this season, including eight victories, seven draws, and five defeats.
He tied with Leeds United 1-1 on Sunday in the twentieth round of the Premier League, raising his score to 31 points in sixth place, three points behind Liverpool in fourth place qualifying for the Champions League and 17 points behind leaders Arsenal.
After the draw against Leeds, the 40-year-old Portuguese seemed angry during a remarkable press conference in which he pointed out that he is the coach of Manchester United and not just a coach, during which he also called on the scouting department and sporting director Jason Wilcox to “do their job.”
Amorim had hinted that there was a state of frustration behind the scenes in the period preceding the match, refusing to give clarifications about his recent statements regarding the club’s plans in the transfer market.
He appeared frustrated when he evaded giving clarifications during the conference, but he was more frank when asked if he still felt the confidence of the club’s management. “I noticed that you are receiving selective information about everything. I came here to be the technical director of Manchester United, not just a coach. This is clear.”
An endless series
He continued, “I know that my name is not Thomas (Tuchel), nor Antonio (Conte), nor Jose (Mourinho), but I am the coach of Manchester United. The situation will continue like this for 18 months, or until the administration decides to change, and this was my point of view.”
He added, “I want to end the conversation here. I will not resign. I will do my job until someone else comes to replace me.”
Amorim, who was appointed in November 2024 instead of Dutchman Erik Ten Hag, had previously led the team to the final of the European League (Europa League) last May, when it lost at San Mames Stadium in the Spanish city of Bilbao to Tottenham with an unanswered goal, but it finished the local league in fifteenth place, which is the worst for the 20-time English champion since the start of the Premier League season 1992-1993.
The young Portuguese coach led United in a total of 63 matches in all competitions, including 25 victories, 15 draws and 23 losses, during 14 months, or the equivalent of 420 days.
This period is considered the second shortest period spent by a permanent coach at the helm of the technical staff of the Northern England team since its legendary Scottish coach Alex Ferguson left his position, noting that the shortest period is for Scottish David Moyes, which lasted 295 days during which he led the team in 51 matches between July 1, 2013 and April 22, 2014.
Amorim’s dismissal comes as a new chapter in the series of instability that United has suffered on more than one level since Ferguson’s departure. The team, which has not won the league title since 2013, has changed 10 permanent and temporary coaches since that year, the most prominent of whom were Dutchman Louis van Gaal (2014-2016), Portuguese Jose Mourinho (2016-2018), and German Ralph Rangnick. (2021-2022) and the other Dutchman Erik ten Hag (2022-2024).
