Egypt recalls baby milk products due to the presence of a “toxic substance”

The National Food Safety Authority in Egypt has recalled a limited number of batches of infant formula products, due to the possible presence of a “toxic substance.”

According to an official statement by the Egyptian Council of Ministers, the Authority announced the precautionary withdrawal of batches of infant formula produced by Nestle, after detecting traces of a substance that causes severe nausea and vomiting in children.

The statement indicated that the decision was taken “in light of an official notification received by the Authority, from Nestlé Egypt, stating the implementation of a voluntary precautionary withdrawal of these payments, to protect the health and safety of children.”

The statement stated that the decision to withdraw came as a result of the presence of traces of Cerulide, resulting from the Bacillus cereus bacteria, in one of the primary ingredients used in manufacturing, which leads to severe nausea and vomiting, especially in children in some cases, and that the products will be withdrawn starting today, Wednesday.

For its part, Nestlé confirmed on Monday that it would withdraw some batches of infant formula products due to the possible presence of “a toxic substance that can lead to nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps,” noting that it had issued notices to withdraw some batches of products in many countries.
