Vinicius dances at the corner flag this time in front of his team’s fans

After being subjected to strong boos, Vinicius Junior, a player for the Spanish football team Real Madrid, danced again, this time in front of his team’s fans, as he led his team to qualify for the round of 16 in the Champions League, a week after he accused a Benfica player of launching racist insults against him.

Vinicius scored a goal in the 80th minute, giving Real Madrid a 2-1 victory over Benfica and qualifying as a winner of the home-and-away match 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, in the match that brought them together yesterday, Wednesday, in the second leg of the qualifying round for the Round of 16.

Vinicius celebrated by dancing at the corner flag, just as he did in the first leg, as it was in front of Benfica fans that time, which sparked a confrontation with Benfica players, accusing him of Gianluca Pristiani calling him a “monkey.”

Aurelien Chouamini scored Real’s first goal in the 16th minute, a few minutes after Benfica took the lead through Rafa Silva, and said: “This is our Vinicius.”

Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois said: “I am happy because Vinicius is dancing. Because if he is dancing, it means he is scoring.”

More than 3,000 Benfica fans at the Santiago Bernabeu booed almost every time Vinicius touched the ball at the start of the match. At one point, they celebrated when Vinicius lost control of the ball. Benfica fans also applauded negatively and strongly when the Brazilian player’s name was announced in the starting lineup before the match.

Real Madrid fans also booed when Benfica defender Nicolas Otamendi handled the ball. Otamendi, who also holds Argentine citizenship, was one of the players who confronted Vinicius Junior after his celebration in the first leg.

Real Madrid said in a statement after the match that it had “urgently requested” the club’s disciplinary committee to open a procedure to expel one of the fans, who was spotted by television cameras giving a Nazi salute before the match.

Real added that the fan appeared to be part of an organized group of fans behind one of the goals at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The club stated: “This member was identified by the club’s security staff moments after he appeared on the broadcast, and was immediately expelled from the Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid condemns this type of gestures and expressions that incite violence and hatred in sports and society.”
