Real Sociedad was crowned champion of the Spanish King’s Cup for the fourth time in its history, after defeating Atletico Madrid on penalties 4-3 after a draw in regular and extra time 2-2.

Ander Barenechea gave Real Sociedad the lead with the first goal in the first minute of the match, then Nigerian Ademola Lookman equalized in the 18th minute, and Real Sociedad captain Mikel Oyarzabal restored his team to the lead again with a goal from a penalty kick in the first minute of stoppage time in the first half.

Argentine Julian Alvarez succeeded in adding the second goal and equalizing for Atletico in the 83rd minute, so the two teams resorted to extra time that did not witness any new goals, with the decision being decided by penalty kicks.

Sociedad repeated the scenario of the 1986/1987 season against the same team, drawing with the same team, Atletico Madrid, and also winning on penalties.
