A new development regarding the trial of detained President Nicolas Maduro in America

The administration of President Donald Trump has until now prevented Caracas from paying the legal fees of the Maduro couple, due to the sanctions imposed on Venezuela.

The defense team for Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores, took advantage of this matter to try to get the indictment dismissed, arguing that depriving the accused of his right to appoint a lawyer of his choice is a violation of a right guaranteed under the Sixth Amendment.

But the Treasury Department has lifted that bar, and will allow defense lawyers to receive payments from the Venezuelan government under certain conditions, New York Attorney General Jay Clayton wrote to Judge Alvin Hellerstein in a letter dated Friday.

Maduro is being tried in the United States on four charges, including drug-related terrorism, after his arrest on January 3 in Caracas during a US military operation.
