17 American military facilities
At the height of the Cold War, Washington had 17 military facilities in Greenland, but it closed them over time, and only one facility remained, which is the Petovik base in the north of the island.
President Donald Trump believes that Greenland is necessary to ensure the national security of the United States, and that if the latter does not control it, it will fall into the hands of China or Russia.
The shortest path passes through Greenland. It is believed to have untapped rare earth minerals and could become a vital player as polar ice melts and new shipping routes emerge.
A 1951 defense agreement, updated in 2004, allows Washington to increase the deployment of troops and military facilities on the island provided that the Danish and Greenland authorities are notified in advance.
Trump backs down from his threats
Trump backed down He expressed his threats to annex Greenland in January, and a US-Danish-Greenland working group was formed to address his concerns.
This is the first visit by Landry, Governor of Louisiana, to the Danish region after his appointment as a special envoy, with the aim of participating in an economic forum in the capital, Nuuk, on Tuesday and Wednesday.
