Hong Kong, May 31 / WAM / Our national athletics team concluded its participation in the 22nd Asian Under-20 Championship, in Hong Kong, during the period from May 28 to 31, by achieving fourth place in the overall standings out of 30 countries, with 6 medals, including 5 gold and a bronze.
The Chinese team topped the overall standings with 25 medals, 14 gold, 9 silver, and 2 bronze. The Indian team came runner-up with 18 medals, including 9 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze. The Japanese team came third with 17 medals, including 5 gold, 5 silver, and 7 bronze.
Major General Dr. Muhammad Abdullah Al Murr, President of the UAE Athletics Federation, described the fourth place as a great exceptional success compared to strong and ancient teams on the continent, especially since the UAE team participated with promising elements against an elite group of the most prominent Asian stars and champions in this age group.
He stressed that the achievement gains double value because the team participated in the tournament with only 10 male and female players, compared to a number of teams in which the number of participants exceeded 50 male and female players, which reflects the quality of the preparation and qualification programs, and the continued success in discovering and refining national talents capable of competing at the highest Asian and international levels.
He pointed out that what has been achieved is a qualitative addition to the Federation’s efforts to enhance the indicators of the development and competitive strategy in foreign tournaments, through a gradual path starting from the Gulf and Arab tournaments all the way to the continental ones, and then looking forward to greater horizons during the coming years.
The President of the Federation congratulated the winners in the various competitions, praising their high spirit and great determination to raise the country’s flag on the podiums. He also praised the distinguished technical levels of the rest of the team members during the championship competitions.
