The Sharjah Environment and Natural Reserves Authority launches an initiative "Sustainable sea" To protect the marine environment
Sharjah, June 6 / WAM / The Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority, from Khor Al Khan Marina, launched the “Sustainable Sea” initiative as part of the World Environment Day activities, with the aim of highlighting the importance of preserving the marine environment, enhancing community awareness of the dangers of marine pollution and plastic waste, and establishing a culture of environmental responsibility and volunteer work in protecting natural resources.
The initiative combined field work and environmental awareness, as it witnessed the implementation of a diving campaign to clean the seabed with the participation of divers and volunteers, with the aim of removing marine debris and reducing the effects of pollution on marine organisms and coral reefs, thus contributing to maintaining the environmental balance and the sustainability of marine systems.
A number of supporting and cooperating bodies participated in launching the initiative, including the Sharjah Museums Authority, Bee’ah Group, Sharjah Fisheries Authority, Sharjah Civil Defense Authority, Sharjah Municipality, and Majlan Marine Sports Centre, embodying the importance of institutional partnerships in supporting environmental initiatives and achieving sustainability goals.
Her Excellency Aisha Rashid Dimas, Chairperson of the Sharjah Environment and Natural Reserves Authority, confirmed that the marine environment represents one of the most important natural resources that requires concerted efforts to protect and preserve it due to the unique biological diversity it contains and its vital role in achieving environmental balance.
She said: The “Sustainable Sea” initiative comes within the framework of the Authority’s commitment to continue its efforts to enhance environmental awareness and encourage community participation in protecting the marine environment, based on our belief that preserving natural resources is a shared responsibility that requires the cooperation of institutions and individuals alike. These initiatives also contribute to consolidating positive environmental behaviors and motivating various segments of society to adopt more sustainable practices in their daily lives.
She added: Plastic pollution constitutes one of the most prominent challenges facing marine ecosystems worldwide, due to the damage it causes to marine organisms and their natural habitats. Hence, we are keen to implement awareness and field programs and initiatives that contribute to reducing these risks and promoting a culture of environmental preservation for future generations.
The initiative included a tour of the Sharjah Aquarium, in addition to a number of specialized awareness corners that addressed marine pollution and the dangers of excessive consumption of plastic materials and their impact on marine creatures and turtles, in addition to presenting environmentally friendly alternatives that encourage the adoption of more sustainable consumption patterns.
During the event, a specialized researcher gave an educational lecture about sea turtles and the dangers of plastic pollution to them, highlighting the most prominent variables facing these creatures and the importance of preserving their natural habitats and their role in the sustainability of marine ecosystems.
In conclusion, the Authority honored the participating entities in appreciation of their efforts and contributions to the success of the initiative, stressing the continued implementation of programs and initiatives that enhance the protection of the marine environment and establish a culture of sustainability and environmental responsibility in society.
The “Sustainable Sea” initiative contributes to supporting national efforts aimed at protecting the marine environment and preserving biodiversity by combining environmental awareness, volunteer work, and field practices aimed at removing waste from the seabed and promoting sustainable behaviors among community members.
