Mexico suspends remote learning and work on World Cup opening day

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum issued a decree requiring federal employees in the capital to work from home on June 11, along with suspending classes in schools and universities to ease traffic congestion during the opening of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decree aims to improve city traffic and road safety, as Mexico City hosts the opening match of the World Cup and accompanying events on June 11.

The opening events are expected to attract a large number of visitors.

Federal agencies must implement telework plans for employees based in Mexico City, with exceptions for essential services including health care, security, critical infrastructure and World Cup operations.

Under the decree, schools from kindergarten to university, whether public or private, will close their doors throughout the day.

The government urged private companies to adopt similar remote working arrangements.
