Morocco and Brazil…a short and exciting history of confrontations

The eyes of football fans will turn to MetLife Stadium in the US state of New Jersey, tomorrow, Sunday, where the Brazilian national team will meet against the Moroccan national team in a strong confrontation in the first round of the third group competitions in the 2026 World Cup.
Despite the great standing that the two teams enjoy on the international scene, the record of direct confrontations between them includes only three matches, of which the Brazilian team was able to win two, while the Moroccan team achieved one victory.
The first official meeting between the two sides took place during the 1998 World Cup finals in France, when they faced each other in the third round of the group stage. At that time, the Brazilian national team imposed its superiority and achieved a victory with three goals to none, scored by Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Bebeto, to ensure its qualification to the next round. As for the Moroccan team, despite achieving a remarkable victory over Scotland in the same round, it left the tournament in the first round.
Almost a year before that confrontation, specifically in October 1997, the two teams met in a friendly match in the Brazilian city of Belem, which ended with the hosts winning by two unanswered goals.
The last confrontation between the two teams was in March 2023 in the Moroccan city of Tangier, where the “Atlas Lions” succeeded in achieving their first victory over the Brazilian team with a score of 2-1 in a friendly match that witnessed a large crowd. Morocco’s goals were scored by Sofiane Boufal and Abdelhamid Sabri, while Casemiro scored the only goal for Brazil.
