House of Wisdom celebrates knowledge treasures through an exhibition"Manuscripts: Identity and Sustainable Development"
Sharjah, June 17 / WAM / The House of Wisdom in Sharjah, in cooperation, witnessed the opening of the “Manuscripts: Identity and Sustainable Development” exhibition, as an extension of a cultural tour launched by the UAE University in a number of institutions and cultural destinations in the country as part of its celebration of its golden jubilee and its scientific and knowledge legacy extending over five decades since its founding.
The exhibition aims to highlight the scientific and cultural value of manuscripts and their vital role in documenting the human journey in research and discovery, developing science and building societies.
The opening was attended by His Excellency Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, Cultural Advisor to His Highness the President, Supreme President of the United Arab Emirates University, and Marwa Al Aqroubi, Executive Director of the House of Wisdom, along with Dr. Ahmed Ali Al Raisi, Director of UAE University, Dr. Ali Hilal Al Naqbi, Director of Khor Fakkan University, Dr. Todd Laursen, Director of the American University of Sharjah, and the participation of students from the UAE University and a number of guests and those interested in scientific and cultural heritage.
The exhibition provides visitors to the House of Wisdom with an exceptional opportunity over the course of ten days to discover 50 rare scientific manuscripts from the UAE University’s holdings, ranging from works, letters and systems that contributed to shaping the features of Arab and Islamic civilization in the fields of the Holy Qur’an and its sciences, the Arabic language and its literature, astronomy, medicine, engineering, arithmetic and other sciences.
The exhibition is divided into three sections that reflect the diversity of scientific fields that flourished in Arab and Islamic civilization. The first section deals with the sciences of the Holy Qur’an and the Arabic language and its literature, including the sciences of expression, writing, poetry, rhetoric, and literary criticism, in addition to grammar, morphology, and other branches of the language.
The second section sheds light on astronomy and the sciences through manuscripts documenting scientists’ interest in studying the sky and the movement of celestial bodies and developing methods of observation, calculation, and mathematical models, while the third section is devoted to theoretical and applied sciences, reviewing manuscripts that reflect the richness of scientific knowledge in the fields of medicine, mathematics, engineering, chemistry, agriculture, and other sciences based on observation, experimentation, and documentation.
The exhibition offers its visitors a journey of knowledge that extends across nearly five centuries of scientific and intellectual production, revealing the interrelationship between various scientific disciplines and their contributions to serving societies. It provides the opportunity to explore pages from the history of writing, copying, learning, and learning about ideas and discoveries that have contributed to enriching human civilization, reflecting the position that knowledge has occupied in building humanity and urbanism throughout the ages.
