A partnership between Abu Dhabi Health and…"Biocom California" Opening new horizons for global health innovation

SAN DIEGO, June 24, 2017 (WAM) – The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi signed a strategic partnership agreement with “Biocom California”, one of the largest life sciences associations in the world that represents more than 1,800 institutions in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical technologies, which strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position as a global center for health innovation and life sciences, and links the life sciences systems in Abu Dhabi and California to support and accelerate health innovation globally.

The partnership aims to enhance cooperation and communication between innovators, researchers, investors and entrepreneurs on both sides, thus launching new opportunities to accelerate the development of the next generation of health solutions and verify their efficiency and expand their scope, in addition to supporting the exchange of experiences within the life sciences system and the development of complexes concerned with this vital sector.

The two parties will work to exchange global best practices, regulatory visions, and lessons learned from pioneering experiences, which will contribute to enhancing innovation environments and supporting the growth of the life sciences sector in both Abu Dhabi and California, while the partnership will link the California global system in life sciences with the Health, Medicine and Fitness for Sustainable Life Park in Abu Dhabi, which will provide companies with broader opportunities for development, innovation and testing across the two markets.

Through Biocom California, biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical technology companies in the United States will have access to the Abu Dhabi Smart Life Sciences System and its innovative model that combines scientific discovery, clinical experience and real-world application within an integrated environment that accelerates the transformation of knowledge into tangible health solutions.

Cooperation is supported by organizing joint events, receiving delegations, and implementing specialized initiatives focused on developing competencies, as capacity building represents a major focus of this partnership, reflecting a shared commitment to developing talent, expertise, and advanced skills necessary to support the growth of the life sciences sector.

Her Excellency Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, confirmed that the partnership with “Biocom California” enhances the connection between talent, research, investments and applications across borders, and opens broader horizons for innovators, researchers and investors to benefit from Abu Dhabi’s smart system for life sciences and accelerate the transformation of scientific discoveries into solutions with a tangible impact on a larger scale.

For his part, Joe Panetta, Honorary President of Biocom, expressed his pride in cooperating with the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, noting that the emirate has a clear strategic vision and a supportive environment for developing innovative treatments, while the memorandum of understanding contributes to enhancing the organization of joint events, building partnerships between companies in California and Abu Dhabi, and linking the emirate to the global Biocom network.

The agreement was signed as part of Abu Dhabi’s participation in the 2026 World Conference of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization, held in San Diego, United States of America, where the emirate will showcase its smart system in life sciences and its partnerships in the fields of genomics, gene editing, health innovation supported by artificial intelligence, advanced treatments, and rare diseases.

The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi delegation to the United States includes an elite group of the most prominent players in the health, investment and innovation system in the emirate, including the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, M42, Hub71, New York University Abu Dhabi, Masdar City, Khalifa University, Kizad Group, “PureHealth”, “Mubadala Bio”, “Arcera”, and the Healthy Living Institute in Abu Dhabi.
