A curfew in the American city of Brockton due to the confrontation between Argentina and Cape Verde

The city of Brockton, Massachusetts, which includes one of the largest Cape Verdean communities in the United States, decided to impose a night curfew before the Cape Verde national team faced Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, on Saturday morning, after police reported that the celebrations after the last match were marred by incidents of shooting, stabbing, and other acts of violence, which prompted city officials to request the assistance of the National Guard.
Brockton Mayor Moises Rodriguez announced what he described as a “temporary security curfew” in the Boston suburb during a press conference. The Cape Verdean national team, the island off the west coast of Africa that qualified for the World Cup for the first time this year, is scheduled to face the Argentine national team on Friday in the knockout rounds of the tournament.
“The curfew is intended to protect public safety, reduce criminal activity associated with post-match celebrations, and enable police, fire and emergency teams to maintain order and respond to emergencies effectively,” Rodriguez said.
The curfew will run from 10 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. local time on Saturday in some areas of Brockton, where thousands gathered after Cape Verde’s World Cup matches and poured into the downtown streets, waving flags, dancing and celebrating until the late hours of the night.
Brockton is home to one of the largest Cape Verdean communities in the country, with Cape Verdean citizens making up nearly a fifth of its population, and this community is often referred to as Cape Verde’s “11th Island”.
