"DP World" Expands coastal shipping network in India with acquisition of ship "DB World Indus"
Dubai, 7 July / WAM / DP World, through its marine services sector, announced the expansion of its maritime fleet with the acquisition of the container ship “DB World Indus”, which has a capacity of more than 2,500 20-foot TEUs, and is intended to support local coastal trade in India.
The addition of the “DB World Indus” ship, according to a press release issued today, represents a qualitative addition that contributes to strengthening the capabilities of the “Shipping Solutions” sector in the field of coastal shipping within India, thus raising the efficiency of goods transport services between the most prominent Indian ports, and providing more reliable, efficient and sustainable solutions.
The ship also contributes to alleviating pressure on land transport networks by enhancing the means of shipping goods by sea, which supports building supply chains that are more flexible, sustainable and responsible towards the environment.
The coastal shipping network of the “Shipping Solutions” sector currently covers 14 ports in India, supported by a dedicated fleet of ten ships, while its handling volume during 2025 exceeded more than 473 thousand 20-foot TEUs.
The docking of the ship for the first time at the southern container terminal at Jeddah Islamic Port, affiliated with the DB World group, constituted a new step that reflects the group’s commitment to enhancing global trade interconnection, through continuous integration between port operations and maritime services across its integrated global network.
Ganesh Raj, Executive Director of Global Marine Services Operations at DB World, said: “India’s coastal shipping sector represents a strategic pillar for enhancing the efficiency of supply chains and supporting sustainable economic growth, and the group’s 2025 report entitled “Strengthening India’s Ship Registry: The Path to Global Competitiveness” highlighted the great potential of this sector.
He added that the acquisition of the “DB World Indus” ship, which flies the Indian flag, confirms the group’s commitment to supporting the local maritime transport system, enhancing connectivity between ports and markets, and providing reliable and highly efficient maritime services that contribute to linking companies with commercial opportunities in various parts of India.
The DB World Indus ship will contribute to facilitating the transportation of containers along the Indian coast in a vital manner. This provides customers with an effective alternative to long-distance land transportation.
The acquisition of the DB World Indus vessel is also consistent with DB World Group’s broader strategy to support India’s trade and logistics ecosystem by continuing to invest in maritime infrastructure, ports, logistics and supply chain solutions.
