The road to the “dream final”… Spain’s path is steady, while Argentina is suffering

Football fans around the world are awaiting a historic final in the 2026 World Cup, bringing together Spain, led by Lamine Jamal, and Argentina with the legend Lionel Messi, tomorrow (23:00 UAE time), at MetLife Stadium in the American state of New Jersey, in a confrontation during which the two teams took two different paths to the final.
While the “La Roja” team reached the final match with stability, the “Tango” team needed to achieve a “remontada” in two matches, in addition to playing two matches that extended into extra innings.
Tomorrow’s confrontation carries many headlines, between the “Tango” team’s desire to strengthen its football legacy by winning a fourth title, and the “La Roja” team’s ambition to restore its glories and add a second star to its record.
Spain journey
The Spanish national team made its way to the final with a goalless draw against Cape Verde, before quickly regaining its balance with a wide victory over Saudi Arabia (4-0), then confirmed its lead in the group with an important victory over Uruguay with an unanswered goal.
In the knockout rounds, La Roja continued its strong presence, defeating Austria 3-0 in the round of 32, then eliminating Portugal 1-0 in the round of 16, before defeating Belgium (2-1) in the quarter-finals.
In the semi-finals, the Spanish team confirmed its right to reach the final by defeating France (2-0), reaching the final for the second time in its history.
Argentina Road
The Argentine national team started its campaign strongly, after achieving three consecutive victories in the group stage over Algeria (3-0), Austria (2-0), and Jordan (3-1), to lead its group with a full score.
In the round of 32, the “Tango” team faced a difficult test against Cape Verde, and decided the confrontation after extra time with a score of (3-2), before achieving a “remontada” against Egypt and winning (3-2) in the round of 16, in a match characterized by competition and excitement.
The Argentine national team continued its strong performances in the quarter-finals, defeating Switzerland (3-1), in a confrontation that extended into extra time. Then it ousted England in the semi-finals after a dramatic “remontada”, which it won with a score of (2-1), reaching the final for the second time in a row.
Close confrontations
The confrontation bears a balanced character from a historical perspective, as the two teams have previously met in 14 international matches, 13 of which were friendly matches, during which Spain achieved six victories, compared to six victories for Argentina, while two matches ended in a draw, which reflects the extent of parity between the two parties.
Despite this long record, the World Cup witnessed only one confrontation between the two teams, which came in the group stage of the 1966 edition in England, and ended with Argentina’s victory (2-1), leaving the only World Cup advantage in the interest of the “Tango” team.
Mixed history
The Spanish national team is competing in the second final in its history, after achieving its most notable achievement by winning the 2010 World Cup title in South Africa, and this time it is looking forward to regaining the title after 16 years, benefiting from a young generation that has returned “La Roja” to the forefront of world football.
On the other hand, the Argentine national team enters the final based on a great history in the tournament, having won the World Cup three times, in 1978, 1986 and 2022, confirming its position among the most successful teams in the history of the World Cup.
. “El Matador” is looking forward to regaining the title after an absence of 16 years.
