SHARJAH, 3rd JANUARY / WAM / “Kalimat Foundation”, the non-profit organization concerned with empowering deprived and visually impaired children and ensuring their right to read, on the occasion of “World Braille Day”, which falls on January 4th today, organized an interactive community program that included a package of activities aimed at integrating Blind and visually impaired children. The program brought together blind and visually impaired children with sighted people in a living embodiment of one society, in line with the mission of the Kalimat Foundation and its goals aimed at promoting independence. All children and their right to education and ensuring their integration into society.

The program was held in Aljada, Sharjah, and included a pioneering initiative to promote accessible games and expand their reach. It presented a group of games designed in Braille and with sensory texture to be permanently available at the “Racks Café” in Aljada. The Kalimat Foundation announced its intention to expand the availability of this group of games. Games in the future to meet diverse interests and broader age groups.

To enhance these steps, a menu was provided to program participants written in Braille, allowing blind and visually impaired children the opportunity to choose their favorite meals and drinks in a step that reflects the importance of enhancing independence and self-confidence.

The world celebrates “World Braille Day” on January 4 of each year in honor of the memory of Louis Braille, who invented the system of writing and reading by touch, which enabled millions of blind people around the world. With 285 million people suffering from visual impairments worldwide, including 39 million blind people, Braille remains the cornerstone of educating and empowering these people. However, access to accessible books in Braille remains limited, which underscores the importance of advocating for their issues and expanding the scope of resources allocated to support them.

Amna Al-Mazmi, Director of the Kalimat Foundation, stressed the importance of this occasion, which represents an opportunity to emphasize the fundamental role that Braille plays in building societies that embrace all individuals with different needs, expressing her aspiration to build a world in which every child has the opportunity to read, learn, and develop his skills, regardless of his abilities.

She said that cooperation with Rax Cafe is an inspiring step to encourage community and cultural centers and cafes to give priority to accessible practices that support the blind and visually impaired.

The program included an interactive reading session presented by story writer Samia Ayesh, in addition to allocating an awareness corner that included a Braille printer and presentations on how to write Braille in Arabic to raise the local community’s awareness of these easy methods, in addition to an interactive workshop for making bookmarks that introduced participants to the basics of Braille.
